During his combat journey, Cpl. Jorge JV Villarreal used a personal video camera to document his experience and share it with his family and friends back home. His intimate and heartfelt video diary accentuates both the tragedy of a life lost so young while painting a picture of events his surviving brothers endured.
JV and his Marine Brothers’ story lies at the heart of American Sons, exploring war combat’s lasting effect on communities and soldiers’ transition to civilian life.
In August of 2021, after 20 years, the War in Afghanistan came to an end, leaving thousands of veterans to endure the aftermath of war. Now, they seek to understand if their sacrifices were meaningful and our communities are left to face the consequences.
While today’s promise to veterans includes health care, economic aid, and crisis support, American Sons reveal more: our veterans’ candid, personal experiences dealing with desperately underfunded and aging bureaucracies and standard treatment protocols that leave them stuck and stranded. We are led to ask what society’s responsibility is to returning veterans and why the level of care truly needed has been missing for so long. Why isn’t there greater awareness and societal investment in caring for returning veterans? How can society listen more closely to veterans to understand their needs? d
