Segundo de Febrero was conceived by students in the mid 1970’s at OLLUSA. February 2 is the Chicano/Mexican American Commemoration Day which grew out of a resolution adopted at the Raza Unida Party State Conference in Lubbock, Texas in 1977. Segundo was born amidst the end of the Chicano Movement in an effort to keep the spirit of the movement alive. Segundo de Febrero coincides with the Catholic Celebration of La Candelaria or Advent, and the Indigenous ceremony of The Blessing of the Seeds. Today this commemoration and spiritual tradition is still going strong on the West Side of San Antonio by the parishioners of Christ the King Church and the Grupo de Danza Azteca Xinatchli. This short documentary takes us on a journey of ancient tradition’s and ceremony in modern day San Antonio.
