Posted Oct 23, 01:19 pm

Altar por Las Mujeres de Juarez created by Laura Varela and Jane Madrigal at Swarthmore College 2006.

Hey Folks! Yes, Guillermina and I are off to Germany this Friday for the second half of an artistic exchange that started with Vaago Weiland’s big splash here in San Antonio. Now it is our turn to present our work and lectures. Our first installation will be at the San Andreas Church in Korchenbroich November 2nd. The title of this traditional altar is El Corazón de la Comunidad: Homenaje a nuestros líderes, trabajadores, artistas y pensadores (The Heart of our Community: Homage to our leaders, workers, artists and thinkers).

The second installation will be at Kulturbahnhof Korschenbroich Nov. 9th. The title to this multimedia altar is Fortress Europe – The Human Cost. The final altar is at the Evangelische Hauptkirche Rheydt or Evangelical Church of Rheydt on November 10th. This is a contemporary three panel multimedia installation that was originally part of the Pan de Vida exhibit at the Blue Star Center for Contemporary Art in San Antonio in 2005. The video altar is an homenaje a los Muertos of the Iraq War and comments on the severe human and financial cost of the war.

Part of my work as a filmmaker/artist and activist has always been to work with youth. Gisha is also the media arts director for Say Sí, a media arts center for youth in San Antonio. With that said we will be lecturing at two elementary schools, who are also creating Day of the Dead altars. We will also lecture at an intergenerational school called the Fausto Academy and the Hochschule Niederrhein, which is the college in the are of Monchengladbach.

Check out these great invitations! EinladungInvitation.pdf

We are really excited! Please wish us luck and keep checking back with me for pictures and more posts.

Paz y Amor!
